In the state of California, the tax assistance centers can be a good source of personal tax help. Sometimes online do-it-yourself taxes have issues that need some explaining and you need a face to face discussion. Many people can get the assistance they need here from a IRS worker.
If you are in need of help with your taxes, the Taxpayer Assistance Center has a live person to view your documents and talk about issues that you are unsure of. This center does not require an appointment, just walk in the front door or you can call if you want to. Not all phone numbers are toll free, so check first. A recorded message is what you will get that will give office hours and locations.
Telephone assistance is also possible if you do not require the face to face meeting. Other services offered are: copies of transcripts and returns, procedural inquiries, arrangements for payments and assistance in more than 150 languages, to name just a few.
